What is Ductless Air Conditioning?

Ductless AC compared with other HVAC systems, provides heating and cooling but requires no ductwork installation. A traditional AC unit has a central unit that supplies cooled or heated air to the house via ducts, while a ductless AC system has at least an indoor and outdoor unit connected by refrigerant tubing and electrical wiring. Heat and humidity are removed from the air inside the indoor unit as the refrigerant runs through it and then released when it runs through the outdoor unit. A ductless mini-split AC can be either single-zone or multi-zone. A single-zone ductless AC contains one outdoor compressor and a corresponding indoor unit, while a multi-zone AC has one outdoor compressor and up to five indoor units. Single-zone systems are designed to cool a single room, while multi-zone systems can cool an entire house.

Benefits of Ductless Air Conditioning:

  • Zoning - This can make your house more comfortable by eliminating overly hot or cool spots, and can even out the temperature. Since each indoor unit can be controlled separately, you can decide which areas or “zones” get cooled and which areas don’t. Zoning allows you to control the temperature in different parts of the house.
  • Inverter Technology - Ductless mini-split inverter technology provides greater versatility and efficiency. It provides a more effective heating and cooling delivery while saving more energy consumption.
  • Extra Quiet - Air conditioners can be notoriously noisy and distracting. Ductless system major parts are placed on the exterior of your home, thus making ductless air conditioning extra quiet. Homeowners will appreciate a quiet and comfortable bedroom.
  • No Ductwork is Necessary! - There’s no ducting involved. When you choose a ductless HVAC system, you don’t need any ductwork under or through the house. No demolition or tearing down walls to cool your home, which can save you valuable time and money.
  • Flexible Placement - With a ductless system, you have more options in placing your system. For example, you can attach the unit to the second story of the house, if you’d like. Since ductless systems are much smaller and more flexible, they often fit in a variety of locations.
